  • 5/5/2022 – Last day to drop this course. If you are enrolled past this date, you will receive a grade for the course on your transcript.

Course Description

A survey of the history of the theatre from primitive origins to Jacobean times. Through the use of historical documents, to contemporary writings, and illustrations of architecture and costumes, the major periods of theatrical history covered are seen from an artistic and cultural point of view. Theatre as a cultural force set in its historical context is a major theme of this study. This course is recommended for students interested in liberal arts, fine arts, and those interested in a professional career.

Course Objective

Through the successful completion of this course, students will:

  • Explore and analyze the major historical periods and theatrical developments in European and World Theatre from Ancient Greece to Jacobean England.
  • Identify and define the significance of major historical & theatrical movements, and how they have influenced one another, their surrounding societies, as well as the 20th and 21st century modern theatre.
  • Examine the history of the theatrical form though a world context, analyzing culture, globalization or global cultural diversity.
  • Analyze theatre as a representation of specific societies outside of the U.S., including England, France, Spain, Japan, China, Greece, Italy, India and other global cultures.
Textbook

The required textbook is A Primer in Theatre History: from the Greeks to the Spanish Golden Age by William Grange. It is available online and through our Blackboard site (no need to purchase texts).

Required Hardware

Computer/laptop or smartphone

Ideally, you should have access to a laptop or desktop computer to complete this course. However, I have taken care to design a course that can also be completed from a smartphone. If you intend to complete this course on a phone, please let me know and inform me if there are any problems that arise. Your feedback will help me improve our learning environment to support more students.

Recording Equipment

You will record voice or video comments in this course using a tool called VoiceThread. To do this, you will need:

  • either a microphone or webcam connected to your computer or
  • a smartphone/ tablet
Required Software

You will use Blackboard for this course.

Blackboard Student App (recommended for all, required for those who use a phone)

I strongly recommend that you download the free Blackboard Student App before course starts you can stay more connected with our course.

You will also need access to create Word documents, and to view PDF files and video presentations. All Kingsborough students have free access to Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus, which means you all have the ability to create word documents. As always make sure all your software is up to date. Make sure you have a common browser (i.e., Safari, Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome), and make sure it is up to date. Blackboard runs on devices with a modern web browser. It is your responsibility to make sure you are using an updated browser and operating system.
